Hornby is a major residential and retail suburb within Christchurch. Hornby is located on an important road junction connecting State Highways 1 and 73A at the start of the central Christchurch by-pass.
Hornby was from the mid 1860s an outlying part of the Riccarton suburb, and home to a number of great houses, the property of important landowners. Early growth for the Hornby region was driven by a successful large meat exporting industry
Hornby contains a large retail mall named 'The Hub Hornby' which is the westernmost within the Christchurch urban area.
The Hornby suburb - which could almost be considered a town in its own right - is separated from the heart of the city by Wigram Aerodrome and the industrial estates of Sockburn to the east.
Hornby has good facilities and is home to a velodrome, built for the 1974 Commonwealth Games and a BMX track. Hornby has annually hosted the "Westside Party in the Park" for the last several years.
